Song Of The Day: The Beatles – “The Ballad Of John And Yoko” (1969)

On this day in 1969 “The Ballad Of John And Yoko” reached #1 on the U.K. charts, their 17th and final #1 there, although it only reached #8 in the U.S. The song was recorded on the spur of the moment one afternoon just a few weeks earlier with neither George Harrison nor Ringo Starr able to attend the session. At this point McCartney and Lennon could knock off a Beatles song in an afternoon and have it go #1 a few weeks later and nobody batted an eye, that’s how big they were. So with Lennon on electric and acoustic guitars and McCartney on bass, drums and piano, the pure joy they had making this record clearly comes through, but it’s a bittersweet joy in retrospect, given the knowledge that six months later these two would be lawyering up against one another.
