Song of the Day: Johnnie Taylor – “Who’s Making Love”

Here’s a song to go along with today’s feature on my long musical road trip through the South. This track was a hit for Stax Records back in 1968, reaching No. 5 on the pop chart and No. 1 on the R&B chart. Written for Taylor by a collection of Stax staff members, the song according to its Wikipedia entry was based on a 1920s track called “Who Takes Care of the Caretaker’s Daughter (While the Caretaker’s Busy Taking Care)”. Why pick this song? First off, it’s a great representation of Stax and Memphis Soul with one of the most infectious, head-nodding grooves ever composed, but the main reason was this was the one track that played during the intro video at the museum that got the crowd moving a bit. Johnnie’s daughter Tasha followed in his footsteps decades later with this cover of her dad’s classic. Be sure to give that a listen as well.
