Song Of The Day: Mike Oldfield – “Tubular Bells” (1973)

Happy Birthday to Mike Oldfield as he turns 65 years old today. You can’t mention his name without thinking of this “song”, 50 minutes of seminal prog noodling that was likely responsible for lighting more doobies and pipes than any other record in 1973. This is only part one – you had to have enough faculties to flip the record for part two. It still sounds pretty good today once you get past the idea of its self-indulgence – it’s best to consider it as a sort of jazz fusion novelty – because it surely belonged to Exhibit A in the imminent Punk Revolution against Rock’s wretched excesses. Besides, who’s got time to listen to a 50-minute track anymore?
