Song Of The Day: Steve Winwood – “John Barleycorn Must Die” (recorded 2011)

Happy 70th birthday to Stevie Winwood, one of the greatest and most distinctive voices in Rock history. That voice has always injected a sparkle into his music, and there’s an uncanny depth and strength in the lightness of its timbre, which defies all the laws of physics. Stevie was always younger than his Rock contemporaries, having begun his career with Spencer Davis when he was 14, but the passing years have also been very kind to him, to which this performance recorded seven years ago will attest. You should watch it, the guy sounds as good if not better than he did 40 years ago, and he looks pretty damn good too. And right now he’s in the middle of a worldwide tour. Hey waiter, I’ll have what he’s having.
