Song Of The Day: Tommy James And The Shondells – “Crystal Blue Persuasion” (1969)

Happy Birthday to Dayton Ohio native son Tommy James, who turns a young 71 today. James demonstrated his abundant Rock chops when he completely transformed the sound of his music from bubblegum pop to psychedelic pop in the late 1960s, and doing it brilliantly. You can’t think of psychedelic pop without thinking of “Crimson and Clover” and this timeless classic. His new sound was so legit that he and the Shondells were asked to perform at Woodstock, but he turned the invitation down because he didn’t think a concert on a pig farm was going to be any good. Just imagine how their career and legacy might have been different had he accepted the invite.
