Song Of The Day: The Rolling Stones – “Hey Negrita” (1976)

On this day in 1976 The Rolling Stones released the album Black And Blue, their 15th studio album and a major turning point in the band’s history. Lead guitarist Mick Taylor had decided to split after the previous album Goats Head Soup, leaving the band at a crossroads. To their everlasting credit, Mick and Keith decided that in addition to a new guitarist the Stones were going to explore new sounds, and so Black And Blue was adorned with reggae-, funk-, and jazz-tinged numbers, all pulled off with typically ballsy Stonesian flair. Of course their choice of Ronnie Wood as Taylor’s replacement was perfect, and although he played on only a couple of tracks on the new album, the fantastic guitar interplay between he and Keith on this number was all the proof you needed that this new version of the Stones was going to have some staying power.
