Song Of The Day: Dave Edmunds – “Girls Talk” (1979)

Happy Birthday greetings to Dave Edmunds, who turns 74 today. Although Edmunds belongs chronologically to the first generation of Classic Rockers, he didn’t really hit his stride until the New Wave movement of the late 1970s. This is because he was always a back-to-basics Rocker, and the big, ornate production style of the Rock Revolution was never his thing. His biggest hit, 1970’s “I Hear You Knocking”, was a perfect illustration of his throwback style. His Seventies collaborations with Nick Lowe, whether on solo albums by each or on the one album they were officially known as Rockpile, were hugely influential in setting the template for the New Wave. Elvis Costello was also a frequent collaborator, and this cover of Costello’s “Girls Talk” (featuring Lowe on bass) represents a high point of sorts for the entire movement.
