Song Of The Day: Unit 4 + 2 – “Concrete And Clay” (1965)

On this day in 1965, this strange and wonderful little number reached #1 on the U.K. pop charts. In the States it didn’t do quite as well, having to compete with a homegrown version of the song, but either way we can’t think of another hit song with such a distinctive Brazilian rhythm making an impact in the Rock & Roll era. Unit 4 was a British folk vocal group, like a barbershop quartet, and the “+2” was the addition of electric guitar and drums in order to turn them into a Pop group. On lead guitar and pulling off the fine solo on this track was Russ Ballard, who would go on to be the lead vocalist of Argent as well as the songwriter for a number of Seventies hits for other artists like ‘”Liar” by Three Dog Night and “God Gave Rock And Roll To You” by Kiss.
