Song Of The Day: Prince – “I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man” (1987)

On this day in 1987 Prince released Sign O’ The Times, one of the more important double albums in Rock history. This sprawling, epic extravaganza is typically all over the sonic map Prince-style, but it also marks a point when the diminutive genius begins to turn away from the hedonistic never-ending partying and starts to tackle more socially-conscious material. The Eighties were coming to an end, and although there are plenty of that decade’s musical idioms still in play here, you can sense the big music changes that were coming. But this track sounds more like those good-time, larger-than-life Pop Rock hits of the early Seventies.
