Song Of The Day: Genesis – “Firth Of Fifth” (1973)

Happy Birthday to Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks, who turns 68 today. He and bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford were the only two members of the band who were active and present for its entire 40-year history. Genesis were pioneers of progressive Rock, and you can’t have Prog without prominent if not dominant keyboards, and Banks filled that bill as well as anyone ever has. He was classically-trained, and to say he brought a classical influence to the band is a massive understatement. His brilliant piano intro to this track from Selling England By The Pound is all the proof of his enormous talent that you will ever need.
