Song of the Day: Bruce Springsteen – “Streets of Philadelphia”

On this day in 1994, Bruce Springsteen won an Oscar for this track he wrote for the film Philadelphia, directed by the late Jonathan Demme. The song, which according to Songfacts was written about the death of one of Springsteen’s friends, beat out another powerful track for the award, “Philadelphia” by Neil Young (Springsteen’s song played over the opening credits of the film, with Young’s song playing during the film’s emotional ending). The song was the first Springsteen ever wrote for a movie; one he wrote later, “The Wrestler,” should have won an Oscar but didn’t.
