Song Of The Day: The Lovin’ Spoonful – “Coconut Grove” (1966)

Happy 74th Birthday to John Sebastian, one of the great songwriters in Rock history. As lead man for the Lovin’ Spoonful, Sebastian had an amazing run of success in the mid-Sixties, writing or co-writing seven Top 10 singles over a 15-month period. By the early 1970s the Spoonful’s breakup, combined with legal troubles and a changing music scene, tossed Sebastian to the sidelines, but he rebounded in 1976 with the number one hit “Welcome Back”, the theme song of a hit TV show. In addition to writing several soundtracks over the years, the skilled multi-instrumentalist has played on dozens of tracks by other artists, especially on harmonica. And just to tie everything up with a nice bow, this ethereal track was Sebastian’s tribute to Fred Neil, the subject of yesterday’s Song Of The Day.
