Song Of The Day: R.E.M. – “Shiny Happy People” (1991)

On this day in 1991 R.E.M. released Out Of Time, which would become a breakout album that propelled the band for a time into superstar status. It topped both the U.S. and U.K sales charts and sold over 18 million copies worldwide. The album’s first single “Losing My Religion” would prove to be the band’s highest-charting record ever, peaking at #4, but this, the second single, also did well, reaching the#10 spot on Billboard. For a band that had a reputation of being a bit of a downer, this was one of the happiest, most upbeat songs you could imagine, its mood aided most ably by the distinct vocals of Kate Pierson of the B-52s.
