Song of the Day: The Pretenders – “Kid”

Let’s go back to The Pretenders’ self-titled debut album for this one, which still ranks as one of the band’s most beautiful songs. I’m not sure exactly what the song is about or who it’s addressing; one explanation I like comes from Stereogum, which said the song is “a complicated narrative seemingly addressing at first a lover in distress and later Hynde’s actual child, whose beautiful insolence has sadly brought the singer’s hand. There is arguably no precedent in rock and roll to this painful admission of the terrifying perplex that is the oppositional world of motherhood and rock stardom.” The song was released as a single and was a modest hit, reaching No. 33 in the U.K.
