Song Of The Day: Johnny Cash – “Personal Jesus” (2002)

Happy Birthday to Johnny Cash, country music legend and a patron saint of Rock, who was born on this day in 1932. Cash was present at the Big Bang of Rock & Roll, the epicentre of which was located at Sun Studios in Memphis in 1956, alongside Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis. Cash originated the Rock & Roll lifestyle in so many ways good and bad. He got messed up and erratic on amphetamines long before Rockers made it fashionable. His 1964 album Bitter Tears was a concept album devoted to civil rights, two notions unheard-of at the time. And he led the way in fighting the record labels for artistic integrity. Cash’s late-career American Recordings work with producer Rick Rubin, from which this track is taken, enhanced his legacy for generations to come. The guy was a giant.
