The Melvins To Return With Double Bass Players

The Melvins have been on quite the creative roll lately and it seems today that they’re continuing that. They’ve announced their new album Pinkus Abortion Technician (April 20, Ipecac Recordings), featuring both ongoing Melvins bass player Steven McDonald (Redd Kross, OFF!) and Butthole Surfers and occasional Melvins bottomender Jeff Pinkus on bass.

You’ll remember that in 2016 The Melvins released their album Bases Loaded. That album featured six bassists consisting of Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic, Redd Kross’ Steve McDonald, Butthole Surfers’ J.D. Pinkus, Big Business’ Jared Warren, Mr. Bungle/Fantomas’ Trevor Dunn (aka Melvins Lite) and Crover swapping the drum kit for bass.

When asked about the release Dale Crover said, “With our upcoming release, we double your bass player with Steven McDonald AND Jeff Pinkus holding down the bottom.” It’s an experiment in the low end of the aural spectrum where we asked ourselves, ‘would it work?’ ‘could it work??’ ‘should it work???’ The answers were yes, yes and YES!”

In the press release Buzz Osborne says, “We’ve never had two bass players. We’ve had two drummers and two guitar players so it makes total sense to now have two bass players.” You can see the track listing for the new album below. Expect pre-orders to be announced soon.
