Song of the Day: Buddy Holly – “Peggy Sue Got Married” (from The Apartment Tapes)

Today marks the 59th anniversary of tragic “Day The Music Died,” the infamous day the world lost Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson in a plane crash in Iowa. We’ve featured The Apartment Tapes on this day in the past, and today we’ll dive back into them. The Apartment Tapes were a group of recordings Holly made in his New York apartment in not long before his death and are known as his final recordings. This is one of six original songs Holly recorded during that time, along with “Crying, Waiting, Hoping,” “That’s What They Say,” “What To Do,” “That Makes It Tough,” and “Learning the Game.” This song and others from The Apartment Tapes went on to get overdubbed with a studio band, but the undubbed versions are more compelling. These songs are always a captivating listen and serve as a great example of what kind of talent Holly was but also the type of music he might have been on his way to giving the world before his death. Definitely check them out if you never have.
