Song of the Day: The Lemon Pipers – “Green Tambourine”

This psychedelic bubblegum pop hit sat atop the Billboard Hot 100 50 years ago this week, where it stayed for one week before being knocked off by “Love Is Blue (L’amour Est Bleu)” by Paul Mauriat And His Orchestra. Songwriter Shelley Pinz was inspired to write the song after seeing a man on the street begging for money while holding a tambourine. The music was written by Paul Leka, who is also known for being a writer on “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye”. The song stayed in the charts for 13 weeks and was the only top 40 hit for The Lemon Pipers in their four-year existence.
