Song Of The Day: Richie Havens -“Handsome Johnny” (1968)

Let’s take a minute to remember Richie Havens, who was born on this day in 1941. Havens was considered a folk artist but his distinctively energetic guitar strumming and his powerfully evocative voice were totally unlike any other folk artist ever. Up until his death in 2013 he was known as one of the best song interpreters of his generation, but this was a powerful song he wrote (along with actor Lou Gossett Jr.) for his very first album called Mixed Bag, which came out in 1966. Havens was the very first performer at Woodstock, and this song was the very first performance at the festival, and what a performance he gave. It made Havens a star. When he passed away his ashes were scattered over the Woodstock grounds as he had requested.
