Song of the Day: Ozzy Osbourne – “Flying High Again” (Live)

Today marks the anniversary of one of rock music’s grossest moments as on this day in 1982, Ozzy Osbourne bit the head off a bat during a show in Des Moines, Iowa. As the story goes, someone in the audience threw a bat on stage and Osbourne, thinking it was a rubber toy, picked up the bat and decided to take a bite. The fan who threw the bat, then-17-year-old Mark Neal, insists the bat was dead. But Ozzy’s side of the story is different as he says the bat was alive and that he was taken to the hospital and checked for rabies. Ozzy, in a very Ozzy-esque quote, told the story in his autobiography I Am Ozzy (via “Immediately, though, something felt wrong. Very wrong. For a start, my mouth was instantly full of this warm, gloopy liquid, with the worst aftertaste you could ever imagine. I could feel it staining my teeth and running down my chin. Then the head in my mouth twitched. Oh fuck me, I thought. I didn’t just go and eat a fucking bat, did I?” Anyway, on that note, here’s a live performance where Ozzy didn’t bite the head off any animals but encouraged his audience to “keep smokin’ them joints.” It’s off the Randy Rhoads Tribute album, one of metal’s great live albums in my opinion.
