Song of the Day: Paul Revere and the Raiders – “Kicks”

Today marks the birthday of Paul Revere Dick, the founder of the band Paul Revere and the Raiders, who still remain active today. This was one of the band’s biggest hits, one that hit No. 1 in Canada and reached No. 4 in the United States. It’s an anti-drug song that was originally written for The Animals; the song’s writers, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, had previously written The Animals’ hit “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place” and were asked to follow up with a similar song, but Animals frontman Eric Burdon rejected it and it wound up in the hands of Paul Revere and the Raiders. Revere passed away of cancer in 2014; he would have been 80 years old today.
