Song of the Day: Bing Crosby & David Bowie – “Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy”

On this day in 1982, appropriately enough, this track peaked at No. 3 on the UK singles chart. Originally a part of the 1977 television special Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas, this unlikely duet went on to become a signature performance of this Christmas song. Bowie wasn’t a fan of “Little Drummer Boy” so he balked at singing the song initially until a team of writers constructed the “Peace On Earth” part for Bowie to sing. Bowie went on to appear on the special in part because his mother was a fan of Bing Crosby, and the two of them went on to create a performance that would quickly become timeless (Crosby died around five weeks after recording the show). The track was released as a single in 1982, something that Bowie didn’t care for and led to acrimony between him and his label, RCA.
