Song Of The Day: Stephen Stills – “Love The One You’re With” (1970)

This song was released on this day in 1970, Stephen Stills’ first and biggest single that would reach #14 on the Billboard Top 100. Stills said the song was inspired by a comment made by Billy Preston, revealing a sentiment that captured the mood of the time but which perhaps seems a little archaic and misguided by today’s standards, but don’t quote us on that. It is most memorable for its searing organ riffs which were played by Stills himself. In fact he played all the instruments on the track except for bass and congas, and he got help on the backing vocals from his C,S & N bandmates Crosby and Nash, as well as from Rita Coolidge and John Sebastian.
