Song of the Day: Otis Redding – “Down In The Valley”

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of one of music’s all-time great vocalists, Otis Redding, who died on this day in 1967 when the plane he was traveling on crashed into Lake Monona in Wisconsin. Redding was just 26 years old. Redding was the king of the soul ballad, but he brought serious vocal muscle to just about anything he was a part of, ballad or otherwise. This fantastic cover is one example; originally performed by Solomon Burke, Redding covered this track on his 1965 album Otis Blue and managed to outdo even the great Burke on this one.
