Song of the Day: Gregg Allman – “Going Going Gone”

Today marks the birthday of the late Gregg Allman, who would have been 70 years old had he not passed earlier this year from complications stemming from liver cancer. This track is off Allman’s solo album Southern Blood, which was in the works before his death and wound up being released in September of this year. This is a lovely and touching cover of a 1974 Bob Dylan track, and one that is sadly fitting for this album: “I’m closin’ the book/On the pages and the text/And I don’t really care/What happens next.” Per Rolling Stone, the song was suggested for the inclusion on the cover-heavy album by Don Was. Allman’s reaction to the song: “Song’s kind of dark, isn’t it?”
