Song Of The Day: Cream – “Sunshine Of Your Love” (Live At Royal Albert Hall 1968)

On this day in 1968 Cream performed their Farewell Concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The band had decided to call it quits earlier in the year, and it was generally understood that ongoing friction between Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker had made it impossible for them to continue playing together any longer. Eric Clapton would later say that none of the three had expected Cream to be an enduring act in the first place, that it was an “experiment” in “pushing the limits” of Rock. Well what a successful experiment it was, unleashing a musical vocabulary of power that Rock had never seen before. Watch this performance from that show. Even though the three members all said it wasn’t their best work, it is absolutely smoking hot, providing a sonic template for so many Hard Rock and even Metal artists to follow.
