Song Of The Day: Gordon Lightfoot – “Sundown” (1974)

Gordon Lightfoot, a leading light of the Sixties’ Folk Movement and the spiritual godfather of Canadian contemporary music, celebrates his 79th birthday today. After turning to “soft rock” in the Seventies Lightfoot hit the jackpot with this song, which reached #1 on Billboard and was a massive international hit. It’s not hard to see why. It is mysterious, it is sexy, it is deceptively simple with a sultry groove and some memorable lyrics. The old lion continues performing to this day, a shadow of his former self but embodying the values of good old-fashioned Canadian determination and grit. Happy Birthday Gordo!
