Song of the Day: Love – “Alone Again Or”

The brilliant album Forever Changes by Love was released 50 years ago this month, one of several all-time classic rock albums to be introduced to the world in 1967. This is the opening track on the album and sets the tone wonderfully for what’s to come with its folk flavor accompanied by a flurry of strings and horns. Per Songfacts, the song was written by Bryan MacLean as a tribute to his mother, who was a flamenco dancer — it’s certainly not hard to detect that influence when you listen. The lyrics tell the tale of a man waiting for his girlfriend, with this verse in particular standing out: “I heard a funny thing/Somebody said to me/You know that I could be in love, with almost everyone/I think that people are the greatest fun/And I will be alone again tonight, my dear”. Uplifting yet sad at the same time.
