Song Of The Day: Booker T. & The MG’s – “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)” (1970)

Happy Birthday to Booker T. Jones, founder of Booker T. & the MG’s, who turns 73 today. Jones was a child prodigy on several instruments, and he began leading the MG’s when he was only 16 years old. It was the first band in contemporary music history to be fully integrated with white and black musicians, but their historical significance goes way beyond that. Given the prominence of Steve Cropper’s guitar, Booker T. & The MG’s created a lasting link between Soul and Rock that influenced many artists in the late Sixties. In 1970 they released an album called McLemore Avenue in which they covered The Beatles’s Abbey Road in its entirety, and from that album came this sultry little gem.
