Robert Plant says his vocals on one Led Zeppelin song were ‘horrific’

Like many of us, Robert Plant looks back at some of the things he did earlier in life with a cringe. The difference is what Plant cringes at is thought of by many as great.

In a recent interview with the Guardian, Plant looked back on some of the songs throughout his career, ranging from before his days with Led Zeppelin to his new album Carry Fire. One of the songs Plant discussed was “Friends” off Led Zeppelin III, saying it was a moment when he realized the macho screams of his previous work might not be the best way to go. Then he revealed a particular Zeppelin song on which he doesn’t like his performance.

“I realised that tough, manly approach to singing I’d begun on (the pre-Zeppelin track) You Better Run wasn’t really what it was all about at all. Songs like Babe I’m Going To Leave You… I find my vocals on there horrific now. I really should have shut the fuck up!”

We’re guessing a lot of Zeppelin fans would disagree, but listen (or re-listen) to the song yourself and see what you think.

It wasn’t the only interesting Zeppelin note Plant shared in the feature. Plant didn’t speak too kindly about the album Presence, and understandably so — it was an album made not long after Plant was in a car accident while the band itself was on the ropes.

“The whole of that album, Presence, is absolutely wracked with pain,” Plant said. “Plus, the fraternity of the band at the time was stretched to breaking point.”

The song in particular Plant discussed in the interview was the signature piece of Presence, “Achilles Last Stand,” which he told a girlfriend years later was the sound of Led Zeppelin coming apart.

“The two of us sitting in a little room on the Welsh borders,” Plant said, “and me telling her: ‘If you want to know what I was like at the end of Zeppelin, really, this was it.’ After it, she said: ‘I don’t want to be left alone in a room with that. It’s too much.’ That’s what it was in the end: too much.”

  1. Robert Plant is one of the few Classic Rockers who have become better artists as they got older. It changes the perspective of his early stuff. I can think of times when he should have shut the fuck up on a couple of other Zep tracks too.
