Song of the Day: “Weird Al” Yankovic – “Smells Like Nirvana”

We’re wishing a happy belated 58th to one of the most beloved — if not number one — parody master of our time. “Weird Al” Yankovic has been creating parody music since 1976 but had his first self titled album released in 1983. That album included songs such as “Ricky”, based on “Mickey” by Toni Basil, “I Love Rocky Road” based on -of course- “I Love Rock N Roll” by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and “Another One Rides The Bus” based on, you guessed it, Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust.” Once Nirvana had seen the song, Kurt Cobain considered the parody as a sign that they had “made it” as a band. “Smells Like Nirvana” is one of Al’s most popular songs parodying Nirvana’s “Smells Like Team Spirit” along with the “unintelligible” lyrics. The music video itself is a close shot for shot recreation of the original along with several of the same actors along with using the same set.

In the world of comedy music there’s never really been anyone as memorable as Weird Al. In honor, please squeeze the nearest accordion that you can find, hoping for many more birthdays for the man, the myth, the legend.
