Song of the Day: Humble Pie – “I Don’t Need No Doctor” (Live at Fillmore East)

On this day in 1968, Steve Marriott of the Small Faces met an 18-year-old guitarist/vocalist by the name of Peter Frampton, and the seeds were planted for what would become the supergroup Humble Pie. This track comes off the band’s 1971 album Performance Rockin’ the Fillmore and is one of those examples of the cover version completely reinventing the original. The first version, which was written by Ashford & Simpson along with Jo Armstead, was recorded by Ray Charles and is pretty terrific in its own right. Here Humble Pie takes that track, removes any shred of R&B and comes up with a rowdy, rockin’ performance to remember. Good stuff.
