Song Of The Day: Lynyrd Skynyrd – “I Know A Little” (1977)

40 years ago today Lynyrd Skynyrd released their fifth studio album Street Survivors. Three days later a plane crash claimed the lives of lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and two members of the band’s support team. The rest of the band and crew were seriously injured in the crash. Compounding the tragedy was the fact that Street Survivors was something of a breakthrough for the band, potentially sending them off to bigger heights, but the crash ended all of that. Steve Gaines was the newest member of the band, and he brought a new level of talent to the band’s songwriting and playing, and who knows where they might have ended up in the long run. Gaines was responsible for this irresistible piece of swing boogie Rock, a great feel and a stellar bit of musicianship (including a piano solo that belongs on a list of the greats). It’s still such a damn shame about these guys.
