On this day in 1968, the album Cheap Thrills by Big Brother and the Holding Company hit No. 1 on the Billboard albums chart. This bluesy track was the second song on the album, written by Janis Joplin and guitarist Sam Andrew, and it’s fairly self-explanatory (Whoa, I need a man to love me/Oh, maybe you can help me, please/Why, I need a man to love/But I believe that someday and somehow it’s bound to come along/Because when all my dreams and all my plans just cannot turn out wrong). This was the last Big Brother album with Janis as part of the band, but the band lived on… as a matter of fact, they’re still active today, behind co-founder Peter Albin and drummer Dave Getz, the only surviving members of the band that played on the Cheap Thrills album.
