Manager confirms Tom Petty’s death

The death of Tom Petty was confirmed late Monday night by his manager Tony Dimitriades and reported by multiple outlets, including the Los Angeles Times and the Hollywood Reporter. Petty was 66 years old.

In news first reported by TMZ Monday afternoon, Petty was found unconscious, not breathing and in full cardiac arrest Sunday night at his Malibu home. Petty was taken to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital, where per TMZ he was found to have no brain activity and was taken off life support. An erroneous report of Petty’s death surfaced shortly after TMZ’s initial report, but Petty remained alive until 8:40 p.m. local time, where he passed away in front of family and friends.

“On behalf of the Tom Petty family we are devastated to announce the untimely death of of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty,” Dimitriades said in a statement, per the L.A. Times. “He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40pm PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.”
