Song of the Day: T. Rex – “Children of the Revolution”

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the death of Marc Bolan, who was killed at age 29 in a car crash. This song, which reached No. 2 in the UK in 1972, is helping Bolan’s legacy to live on. These days, the Children of the Revolution are the youth of Makini, Sierra Leone — once child soldiers who are now learning about music at the Marc Bolan School of Music in their town. Set up by Bolan’s former girlfriend Gloria Jones and son Rolan, the school, which is set to be completed in April 2018, is giving children a chance to songwriting, music theory, and scriptwriting, among other things. Jones told the Mirror, “When we first came here, people were scared of children because of the child soldiers. So we wanted to give them a purpose, hope. They were the ones who said they wanted to give up their guns for guitars. We are determined to finish the buildings because the children keep coming to the school every day. They want to learn. They will make music and films. This is where Marc’s legacy will survive.” Click here to learn more about the school.

On a related note, a T. Rex tribute album is also on the way, featuring U2, Kesha and Marc Almond.
