On this day in 1966, The Monkees television program debuted on NBC and would turn into a smash hit. Younger teens and pre-teens loved the show, but most observers recognized it for what it was – a blatant attempt to imitate The Beatles, not just their music but also their wacky antics in the films A Hard Day’s Night and Help! Still, The “Prefab Four” had two very good musicians in their midst, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith, and the actor Micky Dolenz turned out to have a great singing voice. And the band performed some really top-shelf material written by Brill Building stalwarts Boyce/Hart, Neil Diamond and Goffin/King among others. This Goffin/King number was the B-side to their first big hit “Last Train To Clarksville”, and it is a really great song that somehow evaporated into the ether of time.
