Song of the Day: Mary Hopkin – “Those Were the Days”

On this day in 1968, this song was released in the U.S., where it would go on to reach No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was released in the U.K. four days later, where it would go on to reach No. 1. A cover of a song by Gene Raskin, who adapted it from the old Russian song “Dorogoi dlinnoyu” by Boris Fomin, this and “Hey Jude” were the first two singles released on The Beatles’ Apple label (per SongFacts, it sat behind “Hey Jude” on the U.S. charts and knocked “Hey Jude” out of the top spot in the U.K.). The song was produced by Paul McCartney, who also chips in on acoustic guitar and percussion. You can definitely hear his touches in this song.
