Song of the Day: Alice In Chains – “Hate To Feel”

This day marks the birthday of late former Alice In Chains singer Layne Staley, who would have been 50 years old today. This track is one of my favorites off the classic grunge album Dirt; it hit No. 27 on the Billboard modern rock chart even though it wasn’t released as a single. It’s one of several sinister songs on the album that dive deep into Staley’s drug addiction (What the hell, gotta rest/Aching pain in my chest/Lucky me, now I’m set/Little bug for a pet/New Orleans, gotta get/Pin cushion medicine/Used to be curious/Now the shit’s sustenance) with this one pointing the finger at his father, who himself had addiction issues (All this time I swore I’d never be like my old man/What the hey, it’s time to face exactly what I am). Staley left behind some powerful work, none of it more so than the songs like this one where he takes listeners inside the addiction that eventually took his life.
