On this day in 1971, The Who released Who’s Next, which stands as one of the group’s masterpieces and as one of the great rock albums of all time. Spawning from the abandoned rock opera project Lifehouse, this album produced some of the group’s best-known classics in “Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” and “Behind Blue Eyes.” This uplifting track was one of those originally written for Lifehouse. The lyrics (“I’m singing this note ’cause it fits in well/With the chords I’m playing/I can’t pretend there’s any meaning here/Or in the things I’m saying/But I’m in tune”) paint the picture of a singer that doesn’t know what to say and have been said to reflect Pete Townshend’s conflict between his spirituality and his life as a rock star.
