Song of the Day: Gilbert O’Sullivan – “Alone Again (Naturally)”

45 years ago this month, singer/songwriter Gilbert O’Sullivan had a monster hit with this track. It sat atop the Billboard Hot 100 for six total weeks (interrupted for a week by “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl)” by Looking Glass) and also had a six-week run atop the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. What’s a bit surprising considering its popularity is how dark the song is. The song starts with a verse about a man contemplating suicide after getting left at the altar: “In a little while from now/If I’m not feeling any less sour/I promise myself to treat myself/And visit a nearby tower/And climbing to the top/Will throw myself off/In an effort to/Make it clear to whoever/Wants to know what it’s like when you’re shattered.” The lyrics don’t get any brighter from there as by the time the song is over, it moves on to being about the death of the man’s mother and father. It didn’t stop people from gobbling it up — the song sold over 2 million copies in the U.S. alone.
