Song Of The Day: Joe Jackson – “Isfahan/Caravan” (2012)

Happy Birthday to Rock Pioneer Joe Jackson, who turns 63 today. Jackson turned the world on in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s with his distinct blend of punk and ska and jazz, based on piano and featuring witty, intelligent songwriting. Over the years he’s been doing his thing, bouncing between pop and jazz and classical and mostly off the mainstream radar, but still producing lots of quality sounds. I loved this album with his bold but respectful take on Duke Ellington songs. The first part of this track is an atmospheric sweep featuring Steve Vai’s sweet-toned guitar, but Jackson’s take on “Caravan” (at 5:00) is really spectacular, updating the classic instrumental standard not just with great musicianship but with 21st century energy and punch.
