Song of the Day: Guns N’ Roses – “Nightrain”

This week 29 years ago, Appetite For Destruction by Guns N’ Roses hit No. 1 on the Billboard album charts for the first time, over a year after its July 21, 1987 release. Whoda thunk at that time this band would go on the wild journey it did. Maybe the most improbable thing of all is what’s happening now, how they reunited after so long and were able to put together such a successful tour. I gotta admit I was very skeptical it would work out when it was announced, but needless to say I was proven wrong in a major way — $339 million and counting and already the tenth-highest grossing tour of all time. It’s a good thing — it shows there’s still very much a market for rock, and a market for this band. A big part of the latter, I think, is Appetite, which has aged very well and still brings an energy and excitement that captivates young listeners. Written about the cheap brand of wine Night Train Express that was a favorite of the band in its early days, this song is one of many songs on the album that still packs a wallop and sounds great three decades later.
