Song of the Day: The Flaming Lips – “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part 1” (2002)

My introduction to The Flaming Lips came through MTV’s animated “3 South.” Using the song “Fight Test” off the album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots for the opening credits sequence, I had to know more. “Fight Test” had a joy and bounce that up to that point I hadn’t encountered in music. Hailing from Oklahoma, The Flaming Lips have been around since 1983 and one of their classics, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, turned 15 on July 16th. “Do You Realize??” has to be the biggest song off the album; however, it’s the opening track “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part 1” that brings me such joy. It’s a combination of modern pop music and Japanese noise rock that didn’t exist at the time. In fact the album shows many influences from 70’s folk to future synth rock. Some might not know this, but the Lips actually won a 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for the album’s final track, “Approaching Pavonis Mons by Balloon (Utopia Planitia)”. So, if you’re feeling down on a day like today give Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots a listen and turn that frown upside down. Happy 15th birthday Yoshimi!
