Song of the Day: Sean Lennon – “Julia”

On this day in 1958, John Lennon lost his mother when she was killed by a car driven by a drunk off-duty policeman in Liverpool, U.K. The death devastated John, who was 17 at the time, and later he penned this song, which wound up on The Beatles’ White Album. The song was written for both his mother and Yoko Ono and was the only time Lennon sang and played on a song by himself while in the Beatles (and he got an assist from Donovan, who taught him the guitar style on this song and also contributed a lyric or two). The Beatles’ version isn’t available on YouTube from what I could see, but this live version sung by Sean can suffice.
