Happy Birthday to The Byrds founder and frontman Roger McGuinn, who, like Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson, turns 75 this year. McGuinn was a folkie in the early Sixties when suddenly the Beatles hit the scene, and he was among the many whose lives were profoundly affected by them. In McGuinn’s case he was particularly inspired by the 12-string Rickenbacker electric guitar that George Harrison played in A Hard Day’s Night. In taking this instrument on, McGuinn created the Byrds distinctive “jingle-jangle” sound and set the table for what would become Folk Rock. This song written by Pete Seeger captured it all, and with its lyrics borrowed from Biblical passages it has always carried a certain holiness of its own.
