Song Of The Day: Talking Heads – “Take Me To The River” (1978)

The Talking Heads released their second studio album, More Songs About Buildings And Food, on this day in 1978. This was the first collaboration between the band and producer Brian Eno, and right away you could see the band transitioning away from the angsty “Psycho Killer” punk of their first album towards the more experimental polyrhythmic excursions they would take later on in their career. This song was the first Talking Heads track to hit the charts, peaking at number 26, a surprisingly seductive Al Green cover dominated by the great chunky chords from Jerry Harrison’s keyboards. That a post-punk band was covering Al Green was all you needed to know that something strange and wonderful was going on here.
