Song of the Day: Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band – “My Human Gets Me Blues” (1969)

A true innovator of his time, Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart created some of the most artful and avant-garde music in the history of rock n’ roll. Trout Mask Replica, one of the greatest albums in rock, had it’s 48th anniversary on June 16th and with that we must celebrate with the winding “My Human Gets Me Blues.” What’s thought to be Beefheart’s thoughts on God’s disillusionment with the human race, “”My Human Gets Me Blues” is a twisting three minutes of jazz, delta-blues, different vocal tones, and shifting time signatures. It’s often thought of as the best song on the album and is said to have laid the groundwork for a lot of the 80s’ and 90’s indie/art rock. If you haven’t heard the Captain and want to dip your toe in the pool, 1967’s debut Safe As Milk is a good place to start. If you want to immerse yourself in a masterwork, Trout Mask Replica will not shun anyone who comes to it with an open mind.
