Song of the Day: The Young Rascals – “Groovin'”

This track was sitting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 50 years ago this week, one of four weeks the song topped the chart. It first sat at No. 1 the weeks of May 20 and May 27, then was bumped out by “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, then moved back into the No. 1 spot for the weeks of June 17 and 24. The track was written by Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati about the fact their schedule only let them see their girlfriends on Sunday afternoons. Per Songfacts, record company executives didn’t care for this song, but New York DJ Murray the K thought it would be a No. 1 hit when he heard it and went to Atlantic Records president Jerry Wexler to demand it be released. Murray the K got this one right.
