Song of the Day: Janis Joplin – “Ball n’ Chain”

The Monterey Pop Festival was taking place on this day 50 years ago — actually it would have started yesterday and run through tomorrow. There were a host of legendary acts to play the gig —
Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Mamas and the Papas, Ravi Shankar, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, The Animals, and Otis Redding — but when I think of the festival, I think of this performance first. It’s a spellbinding rendition of Big Mama Thornton’s blues classic and part of a performance that helped Big Brother and the Holding Company get signed by Columbia Records. And watching this video is always fun because of the reaction from Mama Cass in the crowd. We’ve posted this before, but I don’t think anyone will mind using it again.
